Thank you for choosing to run the Destin Beach Ultra Runs in 2022! In a year that has thrown our event another significant challenge, it is awesome that you all have come together to support the Special Operations Warrior Foundation. Please read this entirely, and if you still have questions don’t be afraid to email info@beachultra.com and ask. I’d rather answer questions now than right before the race.
Packet Pickup: Saturday 19 Feb, MANDATORY packet pickup and runner briefing upstairs at The Back Porch Destin (1740 Scenic Hwy 98, Destin, FL 32541). Packet pickup will be at 2PM and the briefing will start at 3PM. Please don’t arrive 5 min before the briefing and expect to get your packet (be early). Only ONE crew member or family member per runner will be allowed in the briefing due to limited space. There is NO packet pickup on the morning of the race.
Race Start: Sunday, 20 Feb at The Back Porch. The 50K race will start at 5:00am and Half Marathon will start at 7am.
Course: Our 50K starts with a 3 mile (6 total) out and back to the west, followed by 14 miles to the east- then return 14 to The Back Porch Destin.
Our Half Marathon starts with a ~3 mile (5.8 mile total) out and back to the west, followed by 4 miles to the east hitting Pompano Joe's- then return 4 to The Back Porch Destin.
If you leave the course at any point to use a public restroom, etc. then you need to return to the beach at the same point you departed. There is still some controversy over who ‘owns’ the dry portion of the beach. However, if you are running along the water line you are completely within the law to run on any part of the beach. With such a small number of runners this year, at no point will we have enough people together to be considered a ‘group’. Please be respectful and carry on running if anyone challenges your right to run on the beach along the water.
Aid Stations: You must check-in at every aid station and you are NOT allowed to take aid outside of the station area. All the aid stations, except for The Back Porch, are off the beach on private property. We will have a volunteer and/or marker on the beach for each aid station exit. Your crew cannot crew you down on the beach so that you don’t have to go up to the aid station (which are off the beach) as the distance to/from the aid tent is part of the total distance. They can meet you on the beach and walk you up to the aid station.
Each aid station will have ultra basics (Nuun drink, S! Caps, gels, salty snacks, sweet snacks, water) and our two aid stations co-located at restaurants (Pompano Joes and Stink'y Fish Camp) will have some additional treats for you. If you have certain dietary restrictions or specific drinks/supplements please carry them with you or have your crew meet you at the aid stations.
Crew/Pacers: You can have crew at all aid stations. Please ask your crew to respect the space of the volunteers and other crews. 50K can have pacers starting at the Turn Around point at Stinky's Fish Camp. Your crew should be self-supported and not depend on the aid stations for food/drink other than water.
Drop Bags: 50K runners can have 1 drop bag at your race’s turn around point (Stinky's). You will drop these in the designated area at the race start and we will transport them to the aid station. We will then collect them and return them to the race start after that aid station is clear. If you finish early, your bag may not be back to the start when you finish. Please ensure your bag is waterproof, in case there are rain showers, and do not put anything valuable in your drop bag. Please keep drop bags to a reasonable size and have it clearly marked with your name and bib number. We are not responsible for lost/stolen drop bags. If you don’t pick-up your bag after the race, they will be donated or disposed of.
Awards/Post-Party: All runners will be invited to enjoy a free meal from the runner's menu upstairs at The Back Porch between 11am and 4pm after your event. Your family is invited to join you, but will have to pay for their meals. Half Marathon awards should be around 11am and 50K around 4pm. We have a lot of very nice awards, considering the small number of runners, so check ItsYourRace to see if you were in any of the following categories. You must be present at the awards ceremony to receive your award. They will not be mailed or picked up after 4pm on race day.
-Half/50K, Men/Women, Overall (1st, 2nd, 3rd)
-50K Age Groups: 18-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60+ (1st, 2nd). Half will not have age groups since there are very few runners.
Fundraising: You all have done an outstanding job of fundraising for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation (SOWF) so far and I thank you for that! You will receive a separate email if you signed up at the discounted rate and have not met your minimum fundraising requirement.
This race was conceived as a fundraiser, that just happened to be an ultra run, and we keep that at the core of everything we do. As you know, the money you raise is very important to the families of the fallen. But just as important, is all the new people you are introducing to the Special Operations Warrior Foundation through your fundraising and running. If those people that donated to you tell a couple new people about the SOWF, and then those couple people tell a few more- we can make a HUGE impact on the lives of these children! Keep up the good work all the way through the event and for the week after by spreading the word about the SOWF.
Thank you!!
